Impact
HORIZONS is helping reshape healthcare services and support, improving the lives of people diagnosed with cancer. Data from HORIZONS are being used to transform services, information and policy.
HORIZONS data have informed the delivery of a digital intervention to enhance confidence to self-manage psychological problems/well-being for people living with and beyond cancer https://www.southampton.ac.uk/research/projects/lynn-calman-macmillan-emotional-wellbeing-project. Analysis of HORIZONS data provided important in understanding levels of depression and anxiety for people diagnosed with cancer and how these change over time. The CAN-EMPOWER open-access online resource is freely available https://can-empower.org.uk.
HORIZONS data are informing the delivery of personalised care in secondary care. The Personalised Assessment and Care in Cancer (PACC) intervention https://www.southampton.ac.uk/research/projects/personalised-assessment-care-in-cancer was based in part on analysis showing the factors that are important in predicting who is likely to do less well in terms of recovery of quality of life following cancer diagnosis. This analysis helped inform the co-design (with cancer specialist health care professionals and people affected by cancer) of an approach for use in clinical practice. The approach has been shown to be acceptable and usable for health care professionals and patients and appears to enhance needs identification and patient experience.
