This is an exciting update to say that three new features of the website are now up and running, as part of my dissertation project on Austen in Translation. Firstly, the 2017 dataset is now visible as part of the database! It adds 144 new translations in 23 languages, demonstrating the variety and scope of the modern Austen translation market. Click here to view and search the database! You can search specifically for 2017 translations by using the Advanced Search feature to filter ‘Source Name’ to ‘2017_Translations.xlsx’. This also includes 40 new cover images, a chance to further engage with the paratextual presentation of Austen’s works across the world.
Secondly, a new map, representing the translations I found for 2017, is now available on the Maps page. Each pin contains detailed information about translator and publication, and the map is filterable by categories such as Language, Gender, and Title.
Finally, I have added a new feature to the Explore section, titled ‘Austen in 60 Languages‘. This sections presents my original research on the languages of Austen, which have not previously been documented in this level of detail. I have recorded the bibliographic information of translations of Austen’s novels (58 of the 60 are editions of Pride and Prejudice) in 60 languages across 50 countries, including 9 Indian languages, enabling a global view of Austen’s reach for the first time. Previous speculation that Austen had been translated into 40 languages can now be confidently updated, allowing future research to be conducted with the knowledge that a broader global view of Austen is possible with enough time and dedication.
Alongside this, I have created another map called ‘The Languages of Austen’, which records all 60 translations and their places of publication. This is findable through the Maps page as well as the Austen in 60 Languages page. Click here to view it now! Enjoy exploring, and, as ever, if you have any information, questions, or comments, please get in touch via the Contribute page or the Add a Translation page.
